Making an Eco difference with the three R's , Rethink, Reuse, Recycle

Making a difference for our future and theirs.

THE GOOD NEWS:  Today, Americans are recycling more then ever!  Over 30% of recyclable items are being reclaimed.

THE BAD NEWS:  IT'S NOT ENOUGH! We need to get that number up even higher if our children and grandchildren are going to be able to enjoy at least as good a world as we have had most our lives!  And we can do this, one person at a time.

NEWSPAPERS

Rethink - Can you read your daily paper online and not have to purchase a newspaper?  If you do want a paper copy, maybe you can share the daily paper with a neighbor or family member, or vista versa.

Reuse - three or four layers of newspaper put down under mulch on the garden will help prevent weed and help keep the soil damp.  By summer's end it will be nearly decomposed adding to the soil (avoid color inks..the black inks are mostly vegetable oil inks and are harmless, but not so with color).

Recycle - most communities have a paper recycling center.  Find the nearest to you and recycle yours!

Why you CAN make a difference by recycling newspapers -

  • Recycling paper uses 40% less energy then cutting trees to create the same amount of paper from virgin trees, so recycling saves both energy and trees!

  • Recycling a little over a month's worth of your newspapers can save the equivalent of 14% of your home's electric bill.

  • You can help save our trees further by recycling, since Americans along throw around a half a million trees into our landfills EACH WEEK (in the form of 44 million newspapers per day).

  • You can help decrease our dependency on foreign oil recycling, since thousands of gallons of oil are saved each year thanks to recycled newspapers.

  • You can help save the 17 trees it takes to create 1 ton of newsprint from virgin paper (non recycled).

  • It takes 50% more water to create one ton of non recycled newsprint.

BUY RECYCLED! Recycling only makes sense if there is a market for
the collected materials.  So buy recycled paper products whenever possible.
If you only ever did this, then the world would be a better place because of you!
